The King of Fats – Extra Virgin Olive Oil

While there are plenty of blogs talking about the differences between one diet and another, there are few posts that address the single most important food that is commonly found as part of the most popular diet plans.  Can you guess what it is? Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)!  Whether it be Mediterranean, Keto, Paleo or Vegetarian, EVOO stands as a staple in each of these diet plans despite the variations between diets. No matter what kind of diet a person follows, they will need some form of high-quality fats to compliment the balance of proteins and carbohydrates.   There are several reasons that EVOO is a center piece in most diet plans.  Being rich in Omega 3’s and other antioxidants, olive oil is special in comparison to other oils.  Many other oils, although common, are highly processed and often have deleterious effects on a person’s health.  Due to all of its special qualities, EVOO has been shown to have some of the highest benefits on a person’s health.

What makes Extra Virgin Olive Oil different from other vegetable oils?

Not all oils are made the same. Today very few companies now are actually “pressing” oil anymore, so the nomenclature “first cold pressed” cannot possibly apply to them. Most vegetable oils including olive oil are extracted using modern, stainless steel machinery, that grinds, malaxes and centrifugally separates the oil from the juices in temperature regulated, water-cooled, computer-automated equipment, while many other oils are extracted using chemicals. For example, both canola and soybean oil require a chemical called hexane to be used in order to extract the oil from the rapeseed and soybean plants.  Hexane is a chemical solvent and cleaning agent.  What is even worse is that many plants used in making canola and soybean oil are also grown using GMO’s which reduces the nutritional content of the plants.  We believe this modern approach produces an inferior oil and we are not the only ones that think this way.  Oliflix is one of the few remaining companies that uses the “old world” production method, which is why we believe so many people LOVE it!  Our oil is gravity separated from the juice and residual paste using several successive tanks. Then it is stored in large underground ceramic tanks to gravity decant, which means separating the sediment from the oil.  This protects it from sunlight, helps improve shelf life as well as maintain nutrient value, which creates a super high quality with superior flavor!

What about heating oils?

Another issue most vegetable oils have is that heating them makes them toxic, creating hydrogenated fats, which are very damaging to a person’s health.  Extra virgin olive oil on the other hand can be used for cooking without negatively effecting a person’s health while still retaining the nutrients we are all looking for to maintain good health. A recent Australian study highlighted how EVOO was by far the safest and most stable oil to use at high temperatures. https://www.dietvsdisease.org/coconut-oil-vs-olive-oil-study/

Nutritional Content of oils make Extra Virgin Olive Oil foundational.

What makes olive oil so foundational in relation to other vegetable oils is its exceptional nutritional content.  It has a balance of both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats but it is also high in antioxidants such as polyphenols, Vitamin E and Vitamin K, as well as other delicate fats.  It is especially high in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), while having a low ratio of saturated fatty acids.   The high nutritional content is one of the most important factors which makes olive oil so important as part of any healthy diet and is what confers so many health benefits.

The health benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil separates it from any other oil.

From a health perspective EVOO outshines almost all other oils.  Both oleic and palmitoleic acid found in EVOO have been found to reduce high cholesterol, while balancing LDL (so-called bad cholesterol) and HDL’s (good cholesterol).  Certain phenolic compounds, which create the bitter taste, along with Vitamin E and certain carotenoids have proven to be powerful antioxidants. This in turn helps prevent many disease pathologies, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.  Other fatty acids such as oleocanthal have been shown to help reduce inflammation and therefore have been shown to help prevent heart disease.   And finally, because of the high amount of Vitamin K, extra virgin olive oil seems to also help protect our bones and prevent osteoporosis.

There are few other oils that come close to providing all the benefits both nutritionally, and from a health perspective that extra virgin olive oil can offer.  This is the reason it is accepted as one of the best oils for the most common diet plans of our era.  Honestly, you can’t go wrong with a high-quality olive oil, whether you are eating vegetarian, keto or paleo.  And of course, the Mediterranean diet would not be the same without olive oil! J We hope will enjoy a bottle of Oliflix olive oil with your next meal.
